What we will do What we will learn 10C 27 Whiringa-ā-Nuku 2017 Quick quiz and preliminaries How to start well SEE the effect of surface area on rate (speed) of reaction What things affect the rate speed of a chemical reaction See the effect of temperature on the rate of a reaction Write up the above two items & explain them using the KINETIC THEORY of Matter WHY the above two things happened.

Combustion. There are two main types of combustion. Complete combustion: all of the fuel gets burnt and the ONLY products are Carbon Dioxide and Water Incomplete combustion: the fuel is only partly burnt and some Carbon MONoxide or some Carbon (soot) are produced too.

Methane Petrol Diesel Gas 55 000 Y N Liquid 42 000 30 000 Fuel State Energy released from 1g of fuel (J) Does the fuel produce this product when burnt? Water Carbon Carbon Monoxide Methane Gas 55 000 Y N Petrol Liquid 42 000 Diesel 30 000 Which reactions are endothermic and which are exothermic? What does “complete combustion” mean? What does “incomplete combustion” mean? Which fuel(s) burn completely? Which fuel(s) burn incompletely? DISCUSS which fuel would be the “best” to use in your car. Make sure you include: The energy released The products released The effect on the environment
