1 What we will do What we will learn 10N 27 Mahuru 2017
Quick quiz and preliminaries How to start well Examine solubility, insolubility, solutions and precipitates (Practical work with word equ’ns, symbol equ’ns and balancing) Why some “mixes” make “solid snow” If time, examine complete and incomplete combustion PLUS the buzzwords “exothermic” and “endothermic” How different fuels behave in engines and Bunsens Learn how to make a decision based on evidence (individual decisions may vary) AND SUPPORT IT WITH EVIDENCE How to make a call and back it

9 Incompatible Ions. There are times when we mix two ionic solutions together and this causes two ions that were not together to become mixed. For some combinations of ions, these become insoluble and form solids that settle out of solution. These settled solids are called precipitates (because they “fall out” like rain and snow “fall out”)

10 Rules for Dissolving Compound Type Solubility Nitrates All soluble
Chlorides All soluble except Silver Chloride and Lead Chloride Sulfates/Sulphates All soluble except Lead Sulphate, Calcium Sulphate and Barium Sulphate

11 Compound Type Solubility Carbonates All INSOLUBLE except for those of group one (Na, K…) Hydroxides All INSOLUBLE except those of group one (Na, K…)

13 A chemical reaction that releases heat energy
A chemical reaction that releases heat energy. It does this by being warmer than the surrounds so heat goes outwards. It will feel hot. A chemical reaction that ABSORBS heat energy. It does this by being COLDER than the surrounds so heat goes INwards. It will feel COLD.

14 Combustion. There are two main types of combustion.
Complete combustion: all of the fuel gets burnt and the ONLY products are Carbon Dioxide and Water Incomplete combustion: the fuel is only partly burnt and some Carbon MONoxide or some Carbon (soot) are produced too.

15 Methane Petrol Diesel Gas 55 000 Y N Liquid 42 000 30 000 Fuel State
Energy released from 1g of fuel (J) Does the fuel produce this product when burnt? Water Carbon Carbon Monoxide Methane Gas 55 000 Y N Petrol Liquid 42 000 Diesel 30 000 Which reactions are endothermic and which are exothermic? What does “complete combustion” mean? What does “incomplete combustion” mean? Which fuel(s) burn completely? Which fuel(s) burn incompletely? DISCUSS which fuel would be the “best” to use in your car. Make sure you include: The energy released The products released The effect on the environment
