Birth Martin Luther King Jr. was born January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. His birth name was actually Michael.

Family Martin is the middle child of three He has an older sister named Willie Christine, and a younger brother, Alfred Danial. His father was a reverend named Martin Luther King Sr.

Childhood King attended Booker T. Washington High School where he skipped ninth and twelfth grade to enter in Morehouse College at the age of 15. He has a Bachelors degree in Sociology, and received his Doctor of Philosophy.

Marriage King married Coretta Scott in 1953, when he was 24 years old. They had four children together, 2 girls and 2 boys. He then became a pastor at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.

Working While King was a priest, he wrote and spoke a lot. He was the youngest recipient of the Noble Peace Prize This was gave to him because of his leading of the non-violent resistance to end racial prejudice in the United States.

Montgomery Bus Boycott This was started by a 15 year old girl who refused to give up her seat to a white man. King was on the committee from the Birmingham African American community. They decided to wait for a better trial and it came when Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat.

Montgomery Bus Boycott Cont. The boycott was arranged by Edgar Nixon and led by King. The boycott lasted for 385 days and it because a very dangerous situation. King was arrested during this time and his house was even bombed. It ended in a court ruling that ended racial segregation.

Southern Christian Leadership Conference He was elected president of the committee. In the 11 year period, King traveled over 6 million miles and spoke over 25 hundred times, appearing wherever there was injustice, a protest, or a need of an action.

March on Washington This march was led by King with 250,000 people who followed and listened to him. This is where his “I Have a Dream Speech” was said. This is one of the most famous speeches in American history.

Visits King visited India many times to learn about nonviolence and civil disobedience. He learned the ways of Gandhi and how you need to love your enemies. This led to his ideas of peaceful protests and boycotts.

Jail King was jailed during anti-segregation protests in Birmingham. He wrote Letter From Birmingham City Jail that argued to have the moral duty to disobey unjust laws. He also wrote books as well, 5 to be exact.

Leader Martin was always the man that the rest of the people looked up to. He was looked at as the man that would lead the African Americans to their free life He was also looked at as the man that white people needed to target and put his family in danger.

Bombed While protests for right, King’s house was bombed Luckily, none of his family was in there to be hurt. They had to move to a new location and the safety of his family because an issue.

Final Work King’s last speech was his I’ve Been to the Mountaintop. His trip was delayed a little bit because of a bomb threat on his plane. His last words of his speech was, “And I’m happy, tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”

Death King was assassinated in Memphis during a visit to support striking black garbage collectors. He was shot on the balcony of the motel, Lorraine Motel. He was shot and killed by a man named James Earl Ray.

After Math After the assassination, the nation went crazy and riots exploded in more than 100 cities. President Lyndon B. Johnson declared that April 7 was the national day for mourning of King.

Legacy His legacy was that he shaped the Civil Rights movement and was able to get tons of laws to change to end segregation. He gave people the courage to stand up for what they believe in and fight for their rights as a human in this nation.
