Programme Leaders Developing Academic Leadership and Innovative Practice

Introductions… Who am I? Why am I here?

Background: What’s a Programme Leader?

. Programme Leader Duties Leaders of UG and PG taught programmes of study. Duties may include… Design and marketing of Programmes And the day job too! Programme admin and pastoral work Improve teaching and assessment practices of the programme team Ensuring students have a great learning experience

. Programme Leadership Programme Leaders are an important group of academic leaders BUT they do not usually have line manager responsibilities. Little attention tends to be paid to professional support and development for Programme Leaders. Academic leadership training is traditionally “on the job”.

There may have been a time when being a leader in one’s discipline or technical area was sufficient preparation for academic leadership within a university: those times are gone Gigliotti & Ruben, 2017

How to help the Programme Leader Community? Support Recognise Reward

Did it work? LFHE supported the evaluation of this pilot project. We wanted to find out what went well, and what not so well, and share this learning with the sector This presentation focuses on just one of our research questions…

A Research Question: What encourages or inhibits Programme Leaders from participating in our development events?

How did we find out? Quantitative data Qualitative data Attendance data collected by Organisational Development Qualitative data Semi-structured interviews with Programme Leaders

Why do you participate in professional development activities? What gets in the way?

What helps Programme Leaders to participate in development events?

Enhancing knowledge and confidence Forming networks Having a voice Practical, relevant information Clear relationship with relevent agendas/ activities Connecting to wider university

What discourages Programme Leaders from participating in development events?

Lack of relevance to exisiting activities or agendas Deadlines Lack of relevance to exisiting activities or agendas Teaching Commitments Workload Lack of relevance to role Not supported by line managers

. Further work… Further work around recognition and reward for Programme Leaders. Amendments to development programme to reflect the feedback received, and ongoing assessment of impact. Continue conversations with academic colleagues and related departments to further develop the support we offer.
