All the Bright Places A Presentation by Iva Moneva

About the book “All the bright places” was written by Jennifer Niven and was published in 2015. It is a young adult novel about two teenagers that want to escape from their small Indiana town. The main characters are Theodore Finch and Violet Markey. Violet counts down the days until she can move away and escape the memories of her sister's death, while Theodore struggles with severe mental illness. The suffering pair find their quirky friendship transformed into a poetic and beautiful romance. The two meet by chance on their school's bell tower with suicidal intentions, and it is never clear who saves whom from falling to their death. If this isn't enough to tie the two together, Finch asks Violet to be his partner for a class project to wander Indiana and find tourist attractions throughout their state. The pair explore Indiana and beyond in the months that follow. However, as Violet's world grows, Finch's world begins to shrink. This is a heart-wrenching, unflinching story of love shared, life lived, and two teens who find one another while standing on the edge.

The characters Theodore Finch is fascinated by death. Every day he thinks of ways he might die, but every day he also searches for—and manages to find—something to keep him here, and alive, and awake. He has different “versions” of himself. Finch dares to be extraordinary. Half of the school hates him for it while the other half adores him for the same thing. But nobody knows he is actually suffering from depression and has suicidal thoughts. Violet Markey lives for the future, counting the days until graduation. She is devastated by her sister’s death and feels responsible for it. But Theodore Finch manages to change her attitude about life. There are also family members, classmates, social workers, teachers and strangers, but the focus in on the main characters.

The author Jennifer Niven was born on 14th May 1968 in North Carolina, USA. She is an American screenwriter and author. Jennifer was inspired by her mother and started writing at the age of ten. Before being successful she was an actress and also worked in a bookshop. She has a husband, but no children. Niven is also famous in the USA for being involved in the TV Series “Supernatural”. She has helped several times with the script and is a dear friend with the actors. In her website she shares that since 2000 she has written 10 books.

Facts The book is a narrative from 2 points of view- those of the main characters. The author suffered from depression herself and witnessed a lot of school drama, which is where her inspiration came from. The movie “All the Bright Places” is in development. It will be released in 2018. Elle Fanning will star in it. Many critics and readers compare the book to “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green. The novel won the 2015 Goodreads Choice Award for Young Adult fiction.
