3  In her younger years, Madeleine spent her time in New York.  She loved creating stories, and it often led to her spending more time writing than doing homework.  At age 12 she moved to the French Alps with her parents and attended an English boarding school.  Her high school years sent her back to Charleston, South Carolina. Throughout her childhood, she never gave up on her desire to create stories. Who Was Madeleine L’Engle?

4  After she graduated college with an honors degree in English Literature, she moved to Greenwich Village in New York.  There she acquired a job in the theatre.  It was at this time that she published her first two novels, A Small Rain and Isla.  Soon after she met and married the actor Hugh Franklin. An Adulthood in the Theatre

5  After she had the first of three children, Madeleine and Hugh left New York to live in a small dairy farming village with more cows than people.  Here they purchased a failing general store and spent nine years bringing it to life.  Hugh’s acting career began to take off, and Madeleine took her love of books and became a Catholic school librarian for thirty years. Hugh died in 1986.  She wrote over 60 books.  She received over 25 awards for her works.  She was awarded 20 honorary doctorates. The Rest of the Story
