Presentation transcript:

America gets in the game Most Americans disliked the idea of colonizing other nations Yet some Americans were outspoken why they should colonize: Need to fulfill destiny as a world power Business interests of opening new markets and trade possibilities Thanks to the Spanish-American war, the US received the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam Led to Emilio Aguinaldo (Filipino) asking for immediate independence like the US promised US engaged in a struggle (1899) with Filipino nationalists US would help them prepare for self-rule Built roads, railroads, hospitals, schools, but exploited economy for cash crops

The United States and Latin America The Monroe Doctrine Many Latin American countries scared of Europeans coming back President James Monroe declares the Monroe Doctrine Stated that American continents not considered subjects for future colonization Cuba Declares Independence Still a colony of Spain but gave up the fight But war raged on US joins  Spanish American War Lasted four months Cuba was independent by name and hated US for intervention  relationship still strained today Spain gave up PR, Gaum, Philippines

Political Cartoons BIG difference between regular cartoons and political cartoons is that political cartoons have to do with current events During this time period, different magazines have different opinions on imperialism in America Judge and Puck magazines-----PRO imperialism Life and The World----ANTI imperialism
