3 The US Felt Superior and Wanted to Prevent Further European Colonization
US President James Monroe issued the Monroe Doctrine, 1823 “The American Continents (North and South America) should not be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European Powers”

4 Cuba’s Fight for Independence
Began fighting against Spain in 1868 After 10 years of war, the Cubans gave up Spanish rulers treated the Cubans terribly and put many into concentration camps

The US decides to help aid Cuba in their fight against Spain under ideas from the Monroe Doctrine In 1898, the war becomes known as the Spanish- American War After 4 months, the war is over

Cuba gains independence and is resentful of the US help in trying to build a government Spain also lost their remaining colonies to the US, all will become US territories Guam Puerto Rico Philippines

Panama was a province of Colombia, so Roosevelt offered them $10 million plus yearly payments to finish building the canal In 1903, the US Navy helped Panama win Independence As a thank you, Panama gave the US a ten-mile wide zone to build the canal 2/22/12
