United States wanted Hawaii… Natural resources (sugar cane, pineapple…) strategic location for defense in the Pacific concerned that Hawaii might become part of Europe Queen Liliuokalani (1893): Tried to reduce foreign influence overthrown by Sanford Dole "yielded to the superior forces of the United States." (Britain or France) 8

Spain seized control over the Philippines (1500s) Spanish-American War (1898) over Cuba Filipino rebels declared their independence from Spain U.S gave Spain $20 million for control of the Philippines U.S also got Puerto Rico and Guam

Roosevelt tried to buy Panama from Colombia for a canal Colombia said no Roosevelt helped Panama become a separate nation Panama Canal, 1914 connected the Pacific and Atlantic shortened the trip by 8000 miles
