Ch 5 – Section 3 Central European Monarchs Clash Main Idea: Absolute Monarchs rule Austria and Germanic Prussia Why It Matters Now: Prussia had big military in Germany which helped set up World Wars Prussian Siege of Kolberg Russia during the Seven Years War

Lutheran vs. Catholic vs. Calvinism The Thirty Years’ War Lutheran vs. Catholic vs. Calvinism 1608- Joined together under Protestant Union 1609- formed the Catholic League Spreading in Germany and gaining followers These three just waiting for a spark to start war Kaboom!

Ferdinand Starts It All… Ferdinand II – Holy Roman emperor Bohemia did not trust Catholic stranger Ferdy closed a few Protestant churches Sends in army to put down riots German princes (Protestant) decided to challenge Ferdy Leads to Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648)
