Germany lost about 1/3 of its population. When the war finally ends in 1648, the outcome was that the German Empire was weakened and France rose up as Europe’s leading power. The Peace of Westphalia ended the war and divided the Holy Roman Empire into more than 300 separate states.

11 Maybe Next Time Habsburgs…

13 Austria and Maria Theresa
Austria remained the most powerful of the German states. In 1740, 23 year old Maria Theresa inherited the throne of Austria from her father, Charles VI. According to law and custom, women were not permitted to rule in Austria but Charles had convinced the monarchs of Europe to let her rule. Maria Theresa had not received any training in political matters but she proved to be a clever and resourceful leader. She ends up greatly strengthening the Austrian government.

14 Prussia Key German leader of Prussia was Fredrick II, became Frederick the Great , expanded and highly trained his military. Prussia and Austria (to the south) fought each other in two wars: War of Austrian Succession: Prussia rises as world power. 7 Years War: : Great Britain and Prussia vs. France and Russia and Austria. ADD: First WORLD War! France, Russia, and Austria lose. RESULT of 7 Years War: France loses most of Canada, Great Britain gets India, Prussia keeps a German state of Silesia.

15 The Seven years’ war (aka the french and Indian war)
The Seven Years’ War consisted of two struggles: 1.) The maritime and colonial conflict between Britain and its Bourbon enemies, France and Spain 2.) The conflict between Frederick II of Prussia and his opponents: Austria, France, Russia, and Sweden. In 1762, Spain, with French support, attacked Britain’s ally Portugal.
