Skill Related Fitness

What is skill related fitness? Your ability to maintain high levels of performance on the playing field Aka: Performance Fitness Influenced by heredity and practice 6 components / measures Agility, balance, coordination, speed, power, and reaction time

Skill related fitness Can be improved with practice Skills that make people good at a particular sport or game Improvement in one skill does not equal improvement in another skill One can have a high level of health related fitness and have a low level in skill related components (and vice versa) Even if a skill level is high, one still needs to practice that skill

Agility The ability to change and control the direction and position of the body while maintaining a constant rapid motion Sports requiring high levels of agility: Football, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball

Balance The ability to control or stabilize the body while standing or moving Sports requiring high levels of balance: Gymnastics, golf, ice skating

Coordination The ability to use the senses to determine and direct the movement of your limbs and head Requires using a combination of different muscle groups at once Sports requiring high levels: gymnastics, cheerleading, juggling, basketball, baseball

Speed The ability to move your body, or parts of it, swiftly Usually measured over short and straight distances Largely determined by heredity, can be increased though Sports: boxing, sprinters, basketball

Power The ability to move the body parts swiftly while simultaneously applying the maximum force or your muscles Function of both speed and muscular strength Sports: long jump, power lifting, swimming

Reaction Time The ability to react or respond quickly to what you hear, see, or feel Can be slowed by decreased motivation and increased fatigue Important to sprinters, swimmers, boxers, goalies, tennis players
