William Henry Fox Talbot Wanted to rival the Dagerrotype Invented the Calotype around 1839 He experimented with botanical images “ ‘how charming it would be if it were possible to cause these natural images to imprint themselves durably, and remain fixed upon the paper.’" He would place botanical specimens on light sensitive material, expose it to light, then wash off the unexposed material leaving behind an imprint
