Welcome to your school library!

We are here to help you find the books you need! Mrs. Gardner – Parkton Elem. Media Coordinator & Our Dedicated Volunteers- Ms. Mary Shaw Mrs. Hoskins Mrs. Susan Williams Ms. Karen Heggs Mrs. Tracey Williams

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) When can I come to the library? Do I need a library card? How many books can I check out at once? How long can I keep a book? What happens if a book gets damaged or lost? What if no library workers are in the library?

When can I come to the library? Open Circulation can run most of the day: 8:15 – 2:45 Open Circulation is closed during the librarian’s lunch and shelving time 11:30-12:00 AND during Battle of the Books or other meetings which are held: 2:00-3:00 Thursday & Friday {and some Tuesdays – listen for morning announcements) If something else comes up it should be announced during the morning broadcast.

What do I do if no library workers are in the library? If you see this note by the Check-In scanner - DO NOT SCAN your books; you may however look for books until the librarian returns. Students do not scan books unless an adult is present since books often get mixed up this way. If your wait is longer than 10 minutes try coming back later.

Do I need a library card? Library cards will be given AFTER you view this orientation. You will not be able to check out books without your library card – no one is going to type in your name. [With the exception of new students waiting for cards] There are handy-dandy pockets in the back of the books in which to store your card so you always know where it is & you won’t be wasting valuable class time going back to class to get your card.

What happens if a book gets damaged or lost?

Open Circulation

How Do You Enter the Library?

Other students are in the library having class, reading, testing, or browsing. Please do not interrupt classes – leave a note instead. Leave a request in the librarian’s Red Notebook by the telephone when you need help & there is a class / meeting in the library

Checking-In

At the Check-In Computer You will have to press the button if the laser light is not on.

Returning Books

RETURN CARTS (only the library workers return books to the shelves!!!) Fiction Non-Fiction

Fiction / Non-Fiction

Keeping the shelves in order

basket BEFORE going to checkout your books. Shelf Markers Students can be sent back to class without a book for not using shelf markers. Please return shelf markers to the basket BEFORE going to checkout your books.

Finding your books The Destiny Catalog is a great tool to help you find your books – it is always on at the flat screen by the graphic novels, except when the librarian is using it with classes. The 2 desktops are also for student use – the one in the corner is for teachers/staff.

Library Policy

You can check out 2 books at a time 1 book should be in your Lexile Level / Reading Zone 1 can be a book of your choosing (with your teacher’s approval) After the routine is established, the librarian will open the Reference section – you must have a good record to use this section (not a lot of late returns or fines

Where do you check out your books? At the Check-Out computer Do not touch the scanner – the laser light is ALWAYS on.

How do you check out your books? Always scan the bar code on your library card FIRST - THEN scan the top bar code (Parkton Media Center) on your books.

Now that you have checked out your books…

1 Week Library books are due back every week- renew books, don’t just keep them Renewals – books can be renewed 1x with the exception of special class projects and if the book is not being requested by someone else. (If there is a class/meeting & you need to renew, check the book in and then back out again.)

Requests and Holds Holds may be requested if you have a good library record. If you come in during classes write a note in the red notebook. Use the “Suggestion Box” (on the circulation desk) for book requests or ideas that you would like to see in the library. Write your FULL name, grade level, and homeroom on the note so that you can be contacted when the item comes in. New books are usually purchased at the beginning of the school year and after each book fair.

More Questions? We look forward to seeing you soon and often. If there is anything you wonder about that was not discussed please let the librarian know.
