Importance of practising letter names and sounds Think of different ways of practising so it keeps children interested Some ideas… … ………… Using different voices As you are walking around point out different signs to the children and what letters/ words they contain Say initial letters/ sounds of things you see Play eye spy When out shopping/ cooking look at labels on food Practise the letter names and sounds that are sent home in the yellow books EVERYDAY Reading with your child everyday

Some more ideas…… Revealing letters slowly- what letter looks like this? Magnetic letters stuck on fridge Children like to be the teacher- can you teach your parents the name/ sound of different letters and their action

Some practical tips…… Look at the front cover and talk about what you think the book might be like Look through the book and discuss all the pictures/ illustrations Talk about what has happened and what might happen next Read the book together, pointing at the words as you read Let your child read the book to you Talk about the story afterwards- what was your favourite part? etc Get your child to retell the story in their own words

Moving on in letter and sounds ch sh th ng ai ee igh oa oo

Next week… Reading and writing tricky words Finding interesting ways to write
