Share an understanding of reading development with you. Introduce the way we teach phonics, reading and writing in school. Share strategies to support you at home with your child’s reading development . Start small, dream and achieve big.

4 Sound pronunciation It is important that we use pure sounds, such as ‘s’ not ‘suh’, so that your child will be able to blend the sounds into words. Start small, dream and achieve big.

6 How do we teach it? Learning a new sound through actions. We follow letters and Sounds. Children are taught the letters in a particular order. Start small, dream and achieve big.

11 Snake Sounds Snake Sounds can be used in a variety of ways. The idea is to practise the sounds on the snake but then cut out the sounds in the square boxes to allow the children to make words with them. Start small, dream and achieve big.

14 Where it gets a bit tricky
There are 42 phonemes to teach in total. Some of these phonemes are made of more than one letter including…… sh as in shop ai as in rain oa as in boat igh as in light ure as in manure Start small, dream and achieve big.

19 Bear Words Bear words are a fun, structured, and unique way of helping children learn to read high frequency and tricky words. Each child starts on Bear 1. Each child will have their own little bear and the words attached to it. Start small, dream and achieve big.

20 How to use the bear words:
Learn to read all the words on the bear. Use the word cards to make sentences. Encourage your child to write one sentence they have made. Please note to be able to move on to the next bear, children must be able to instantly (without sounding out) recognise all the words on the bear. Start small, dream and achieve big.
