4. How do we teach phonics in school?
Letters & Sounds
There are 6 phases.
Phase Develops the importance of developing reading and listening skills.
Phase Marks the beginning of systematic high quality phonic work.
Phase Continues to build on skills and knowledge acquired in phase 2.

5. Jolly Phonics
A scheme that helps children to learn the sounds by using actions.
Phonics Bug.
A computer program used throughout the school.

6. Easy as a ,b, c, ...... Hear the sound.
2. Say the sound. We teach the sounds along with the action from Jolly Phonics

9. We will be doing lots of sound talk in class. Try it with your child-
can they follow your
instructions?

12. 44 different sounds! However…… The English alphabet has 26 letters
but there are
44 different sounds!

For example the sound ‘igh’ is also made from these letters

i_ e = bike

15. Children will need to know these
sounds so they can hear them in
the words and then use them when
reading and writing independently.

17. Ways to help at home Play I spy but sound out the word.
Use magnetic letters for your fridge
and use them to make words together.
Practise breaking/segmenting words.

Set a timer.
Hunt the word.
Play pairs.
