What is body composition? The body is made up of many tissues: Muscle, fat, tissue, and bones All of these tissues together make up Body Composition

Associated with Obesity Health Risks Associated with Obesity Shorter Life Span Higher risk of disease Greater chance of complications during surgery immobility

Fat is Necessary for: Insulator-helps body adapt to heat and cold Shock absorber-protect body organs and bones from injury Helps body use vitamins effectively Used to store energy

Eating Disorders There are three main eating disorders: Anorexia nervosa- severely restricting amount of food eaten, also may do extensive amounts of physical activity. Anorexia athletica- Similar to anorexia nervosa but is common among athletes. Bulimia- when a person binge eats and then purges after in an attempts to lose weight.

25-32% for females 15-25% for males Healthy Body Fat Range Too Little Fat can result in health problems just like having too much fat can. The minimum amount of body fat is called Essential Body Fat. If fat levels drop below this amount then health problems result.

Losing Weight Safely Aim for gradual weight loss- no more than 2 pounds A week Consume a high percentage of calories from complex carbs and low percentage from fat Eat a wide variety of foods from all food groups Exercise regularly Do not use appetite suppressant drugs!
