New Breaks, New Horizons Setting SMART Goals

Introduction What do I want to achieve? How do I break this down into manageable goals? How do I set SMART goals I can achieve?

What do I want to achieve? Large aims, e.g. I will get a job I will start a business I will lose weight

What needs to happen? To get a job: Decide what I can do Decide what jobs to go for Identify my strengths Identify any gaps and fill them Find vacancies Write a CV and apply for suitable roles Attend interviews Start job

S M A R T Set SMART goals pecific easurable chievable elevant ime-bound

Specific Examples: I will lose 10 lbs in weight I will research 2 companies I would like to work for and send a speculative CV to each I will think of three business ideas and research existing businesses in those fields

Measurable How will you measure progress? How will you know when you have achieved your goal?

Achievable Your goal should be stretching, but possible e.g. Losing a stone in weight in a week is not achievable e.g. Writing a CV is achievable

Relevant The goal must be something you want or need to achieve Will it take you closer to where you want to be? Will it make your life better/easier/happier?

Time-bound When will you achieve it by? Give yourself a deadline, and make sure it is realistic

Next Steps Decide on no more than three big aims Break them down into SMART goals Start achieving them!
