1 Dreams And Goals

2 What is a Dream? A strong desire A hope for our future
Something that we wish would happen An image or vision of what we want Something that may seem unattainable Strong Desire – Something you really want Hope – Examples: I hope I can work with animals. I hope to maybe write a novel someday. Wish – Examples: I wish I could buy those cute new boots or I wish I could afford a car when I’m 18. Vision – Story – My son was a baseball player. When someone would go to the plate to bat, the coach would often say “See that hit. Visualize it. You can do it. Visualize it!” Often it helped the guys focus and often they would get that hit.

3 Why Have Dreams? Help us focus on what we want in life and on what we want to achieve Help us imagine what life could be like Help direct our decisions and actions Focus – What do YOU want? Other people may tell you what to do or have their dreams for you, but what do you want? Imagine – How many of you have watched the TV show Cash Cab? Explain the show for those who don’t know. Maybe you have seen that show and wondered what New York was like. Maybe you imagined what it would be like to visit New York. Direct our decisions – You think you might want to be a doctor or work to find a cure for something or maybe work to find solutions for chemicals that pollute. All those occupations require science classes so you make sure to take as much science as you can while you find out more about those occupations.

4 Dreams may be BIG Dare to dream big!
Ask who each person is in the photo and ask what their goals were. These were very big dreams. Dare to dream big!

5 But some dreams are small. Her dream was to learn to ride a bike
But some dreams are small. Her dream was to learn to ride a bike. How many of you remember the first time you rode a bike? At the time it may have felt like a big dream. What do you suppose the father’s dream is for his daughter? Dreams may be SMALL

6 But HOW do I make my dreams come true?
You gotta have goals because: People would be adrift without them. Everyone works hard but too often they don’t reach their dreams because they haven’t turned them into a goal. They are still dreaming, wishing, hoping… Many people haven’t spent time thinking about what they want and what is important to them. And often it’s as simple as they haven’t learned HOW to set goals. We will show you how.

7 Fulfilled Dreams What is a Goal?
A Goal is something that we make an effort to achieve by taking action in a certain timeframe A Goal is an Objective. It is something we work toward. Achieved Goals are Accomplishments Lots of Accomplishments add up to A goal is a way to think of you ideal future. It motivates you to turn a vision into reality. Fulfilled Dreams

8 Why Set Goals? Goal Setting is a powerful process to clarify what you want Goals motivate you to turn your vision into a reality Goals help you focus your time and energy on your dreams and objectives Goals make you accountable Goals provide a roadmap to take you from where you are to where you want to be Clarify – Wishes are fuzzy and poorly defined. A wish would be “I want to have more money,” whereas a goal would be “I will find a job (babysitting or mowing lawns) and earn $500 by the end of the summer.” Motivate – Goals become something you strive for. Focus – What is important versus a distraction. Think about how many distractions we have – internet, twitter, snapchat, video games, TV. How many of you mentors have started searching the web for something and suddenly one or two hours have gone by? Goals help you get past the distractions. Accountability – Setting a goal makes you accountable to yourself. Sharing your goal with a friend makes you accountable to yourself and them since they will be asking you about it. Sharing a common goal (ie. Two of you want to go to the same summer camp program together) makes you accountable to each other. Roadmap –

9 Goals Are Dreams With Deadlines
Taking what you want to achieve and saying, “I WILL accomplish what I want to do by this date.” Diana Schart Hunt

10 G O A L S You can accomplish anything
By dreaming dreams and learning to set G O A L S You Can Accomplish Anything!! You can accomplish anything

11 SMART Goals Specific A SMART goal describes what you want to achieve in clear, strong, positive language. Measurable A SMART goal has a way for you to know when you have reached it. It will have something to measure. Achievable A SMART goal is one that you have the determination to pursue either by yourself or with help. Realistic A SMART goal is realistic if you have looked at all of the things that will need to happen for you to achieve it and have decided that you will be able to overcome any obstacles that may be in your way. Timed A SMART goal has a deadline or a timeline for reaching it. Specific – Use one of the dreams from the dream shout out activity and reword it to show the students how to make it a specific goal. Emphasis the use of positive language. Measurable – Goals require dates, time frames, amounts or dollars – By the end of the summer, I will save $500 for college. Achievable – Goals must be linked to your talents and aspirations. Realistic – You tap into your strengths – For some of you it might be to participate in your sport in the Olympics. That takes tremendous dedication, time and effort. So for some of you a more realistic goal is to be on the high school team or you may want to work toward playing on a college team. Timed – Always include a timeframe and deadlines.

12 Goals help you… Become more confident
Gain a positive outlook on the future Improve control over your life Decrease unhealthy habits Read list and make these points: - Remember the confidence you felt the first time you learned to ride that bike? When you achieve a goal, you build confidence Goals give you control over your life. You aren’t waiting for that dream or wishing your life away. You are making it happen. - Goals can be used to achieve many things including unhealthy habits. I used to bite my fingernails. Finally I decided I would stop, created a goal, and worked hard to achieve it. Improve your academic performance Increase your organization skills Develop time management skills

13 “It’s important to have a plan, a big picture.
You can deviate from it or change it completely, but it gives you something to work for.” While you work toward your goals, keep in mind that as you learn more about yourself and your likes and dislikes, your goals may be modified along the way. Story: My son had surgery when he was 14. He was cared for by a male nurse. We asked him how he ended up working in this hospital. He told us that he originally wanted to be a doctor. After beginning his doctor program, he realized he preferred to work directly with patients and wanted to be able to spend more one on one time with patients than doctors typically have. He changed his goal and became a nurse. Question: Did he fail because he didn’t achieve his goal? No But if he hadn’t been working toward the goal to become a doctor, he wouldn’t have taken all the science classes, he wouldn’t have worked with patients and discovered he loved it, and he wouldn’t have achieved his dream job of being a nurse. Shannon Miller, most decorated gymnast in U.S. history

14 Goals Can Be Immediate Short-Term Long-Term
Immediate – Immediate goals start today and are small steps you can take. Short-term – Short-term goals help you reach those long-term goals. Long-term – Why do we create goals? Because time is precious and we don’t want to waste it on all those distractions Long-Term

15 Goals can be used to achieve ANYTHING Types of Goals might include:
Personal Development Academic Athletic Feats Financial Leisure and Social Goals Here are some ideas for you to think about when creating goals right now: Personal – It will be a little scary to go to high school and I’m kind of shy. Goal – Join one new group in H.S. Academic Goal – I will get all As and Bs in my freshman year of high school. Athletic – I will reduce my time in the 100 meter dash by 1 second this track season. Financial – I will save $500 by the end of next summer. Leisure/Social – I will take an art class in the community ed program this summer or I will save $3/week so I can visit Chicago when I turn 18. I will save $10/week so I can purchase a car when I turn 18.

16 SMART Goals Specific A SMART goal describes what you want to achieve in clear, strong, positive language. Spend time with your mentor on your own dream. Turn it into a goal.

17 Determination and Perseverance
Stay Motivated Ask for Support from Others Look for a Source of Inspiration Write Down your Goals and To-Do List Share Your Goals with Others Reward yourself Motivated – Staying motivated can be hard. How many of you have heard of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC)? The man who started it, Colonel Saunders tried to sell his recipe idea to 1000 restaurants before he started KFC. Support – Every one of us needs support Inspiration – If you would like to become a teacher, think of a favorite teacher and ask that person if you could talk to them once in a while as you work toward your goal of becoming a teacher. Write it down!!! Studies show you are 60-80% more likely to achieve your goals IF you write them down! Share – You are 33% more likely to achieve your goals if you share them with others. Build a support network! And of course, reward yourself! It just makes it more fun!

18 Have your dreams come true!
Dreams and Goals Have a Dream. Dream BIG! Make a conscious decision to achieve the dream Create a plan with specific, measurable timed goals Identify people and resources that can help you achieve your goals Write down your goals and share them with others Have your dreams come true!
