Kingdom Fungi I. General Characteristics 1. Found almost everywhere 2. Used to be classified as plants because they were anchored and have cell walls,
Fungi. Characteristics eukaryotic multicellular (except yeasts) heterotrophic by absorption (saprophytes – feed on dead organic matter) reproduce sexually.

Kingdom Fungi G.Burgess 2009.

Characteristics Multicellular Heterotrophic Cell wall made of chitin nonvascular Reproduction asexual (fragmentation) and sexual reproduction (spores). Extracellular digestion Absorb materials through mycelium (branching filaments called hypha)

Classification of Fungi Classified by method of reproduction and reproductive structures. Division Mastigomycota Produce flagelated spores cellulose walls

Classification of Fungi Division Amastigomycota Produce non-motile spores Chitin cell walls Class Zygomycota Elongated multiple nuclei that are haploid Reproduction is asexual by spores Class Ascomycota* Yeasts reproduce asexually by budding and sexually by forming a sac Class Basidiomycota* Common mushroom and puffball Sexual reproduction forms basidiospores on club shaped cells called basidia

Relations with other organisms Lichens Symbiotic relations between fungi and cyanobacteria, or a green algae Fungal portion makes the structure, and absorbs nutrients from a substrate. The algal or cyanobacteria portion provides nourishment via photosynthesis.
