Literacy is an important indicator of education.
The literacy rate for population 10 years and above is 58 percent during 2010-11, as compared to 57 percent in 2008-09. Literacy remains much higher in urban areas than in rural areas and much higher in men than in women.
Urban - rural divide The urban-rural gulf is still wide in terms of literacy rate – standing at 74 per cent in urban areas and 49 per cent in rural areas, pointing to the widening gap between rural and urban education systems.
