The Epistle to the Hebrews Lesson 19 Of Whom the World Was Not Worthy Hebrews 11:23-40

Of Whom The World Was Not Worthy Hebrews 11:23-40 By faith Moses’ Parents… (11:23) Hid Moses (Exodus 1:22; 2:1-10; 6:20) He was a beautiful child and they did not fear the king. At 3 months he was set out in an ark of bulrushes in the river, where he was found by Pharaoh’s daughter. He was raised in the Egyptian royal family and given an education (Acts 7:20-22)

Of Whom The World Was Not Worthy Hebrews 11:23-40 By faith Moses… (11:23-26) Refused to be called the Son of Pharaoh’s daughter Chose to suffer affliction rather than enjoy the passing pleasures of sin Esteemed the reproach of Christ greater riches than Egypt because he looked to the reward Forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king because he endured as seeing Him who is invisible Kept the Passover and sprinkling of blood; believing that the firstborn would die if he failed to do so.

Of Whom The World Was Not Worthy Hebrews 11:23-40 By faith the Israelites passed through the Red Sea on dry land (11:29; Exodus 14:15-29)

Of Whom The World Was Not Worthy Hebrews 11:23-40 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down (11:30) They were encircled for 7 days by faith. The Lord had “given” Jericho to Israel, but their faith had to work in order for them to take the city. (Joshua 6:2-3) By faith Rahab received the spies (11:31) Her action is an example of faith that works to receive justification (James 2:25)

Of Whom The World Was Not Worthy Hebrews 11:23-40 By faith Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets… (11:32-35) Subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, and obtained promises Stopped the mouths of lions (Judges 14:5-6; 1 Samuel17:34-37) Quenched the violence of fire (Daniel 3:19-28) Escaped the edge of the sword (1 Kings 19:9-10) Out of weakness were made strong (Jdg. 16:26-30) Became valiant in battle, repelled alien armies (Judges 6 & 7) Women received their dead raised to life again (1 Kings 17:17-24; 2 Kings 4:32-37)

Of Whom The World Was Not Worthy Hebrews 11:23-40 By faith they endured persecution and hardship… (11:35b-38) They were tortured, but did not accept their deliverance, in order to obtain a better resurrection. They were mocked, scourged, chained and imprisoned. (Jeremiah 20:2) They were stoned, sawn in two, tempted, and slain with the sword. (2 Chronicles 24:20-21) They wore sheepskins and goatskins. They were destitute, afflicted, tormented. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and in caves (1 Samuel 22:1; 1 Kings 8:13; 19:9) The World was not Worthy of Them!

Of Whom The World Was Not Worthy Hebrews 11:23-40 Because of their lives of faith, good things are said about these heroes, but they did not receive the promise. (11:39) God has provided something BETTER for us! (11:40) Without what God has provided for us, their lives of faith would not be complete. Heaven now awaits those who live lives of faith because of the work of Jesus (cf. 12:1-2)
