1 The Faith of a Godly Woman
Exodus 2:1-10

2 The Larger Context: Genesis

3 The Immediate Context: Exodus 1
“There arose a new king over Egypt, that did not know Joseph.” Instructions to the midwives: kill the sons, let the daughters live Midwives lie to save the sons Pharaoh gives explicit instructions to everyone: cast the sons into the water, but let the daughters live

4 Why Faith? Hebrews 11:23 “By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.” Beautiful (NT) = elegant Beautiful, fine (OT) = good

5 What is Faith? Hebrews 11:1, 3 “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen…By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.” Trust, Belief Belief that affects the way you live

6 Faith Brings Understanding
We are to champion innocent life Genesis 9:5 “And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning.” Deut 5:17 “You shall not murder.” Murder of children especially wrong Leviticus 20:1-5 How could they know? Rom 2:15 “Their conscience also bears them witness”

7 Faith Brings Understanding
We have a responsibility as parents/ grandparents/ church members to know God’s Word and to teach it to our children

8 Faith is Active Hebrews 11:23 “By faith Moses…was hidden”
James 2:17, 24 “So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead…You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.” Put Moses in an “ark” Sidelight: Could they say they obeyed the law?

9 Faith is Active We have a responsibility as parents/ grandparents/ church members to live God’s Word in front of our children

10 Faith Trusts God Amram and Jochebed give their child to God (Exodus 6:20) Similar to Hannah in 1 Samuel 1 Samuel 1:28 “Therefore I have lent him to the LORD. As long as he lives, he is lent to the LORD.” Difficult for parents “I know you love her more than I do” Difficult for anybody about anything

11 Faith is Rewarded God does something amazing!
But does it always work out that way? Hannah only saw her son once a year We have to be careful about how we think about rewards “God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life” could mean something radically different than the way many people take it!

12 Hebrews 11:32-38 “And what more shall I say
Hebrews 11:32-38 “And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets— who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received back their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing

13 to accept release, so that they might rise again to a better life
to accept release, so that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated— of whom the world was not worthy—wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.”
