Identifying and Modeling Fractions Pamela D. Coleman

What is a fraction? A fraction represents a part of a whole or part of a set. Example: The pizza slice is one part of the whole pizza.

TIP: The Denominator is Downstairs Fractions There are two numbers in a fraction. 1 2 The top number is called the numerator. The bottom number is called the denominator. TIP: The Denominator is Downstairs

Fractions 1 2 The numerator tells how many parts of the whole or set you have. The denominator tells how many parts the whole or set is divided into.

Example 4 1 2 The circle is divided into 4 equal parts, or fourths. Each part is one-fourth of the whole circle - one part out of four parts in all. Two parts out of four parts would be… Two-fourths or one half 1 4 1 2

1/2 Example The window is divided into 2 equal parts, or halves. Each part is one half of the whole window - one part out of two parts in all. Two parts out of two parts would be… One whole or 2/2 or 1 1/2

Fractions Part of a whole Top number is the numerator Numerator – tells how many parts of the whole you have Fractions Denominator –how many parts the whole is divided into Top number is the numerator Bottom number is the denominator

Practice... Play What fraction of the pizza has pepperoni on it? Hint: How many slices have pepperoni on them? 3 Hint: How many slices are there in all? 4 What fraction of the pizza has pepperoni on it? ¾ (three-fourths) That’s correct! Play Let’s play a game!
