Presentation transcript:

The New Military-Industrial Complex? President Eisenhower warned the American people of the dangers of a military-industrial complex in 1961 The expectation of a “peace dividend” at the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s was followed by a strong military-industrial buildup after the 9/11 attack in 2001

The Complex Continued from Bush to Obama to Trump The American involvement in the two wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and in the Middle East in general strengthened the buildup The rise of an secret security state: covert actions by the US government in the war on terrorism that continued from Bush to Obama to Trump administrations The rise of an information security state: National Security Agency, the Snowden revelations, and the charge of Russian hackers influencing American presidential election in 2016 against Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and in favor of Republican candidate Donald Trump.
