LDS Topic #11 Steve Jobs talks about teamwork

A group of people working together to achieve a common goal. What is a team? Employee teams are one of the best ways to get things done in any business. When you take a group of independently talented people and create a team in which they can merge their talents, not only will a remarkable amount of energy and creativity be released, but their performance, loyalty and engagement will be greatly improved A group of people working together to achieve a common goal.

What is teamwork? The ability to cooperate and communicate effectively with others to achieve a common goal.

Group vs. team Groups Teams Members work independently and often are not working towards same goal. Members work interdependently and work towards both personal and team goals. Members focus mostly on themselves because they are not involved in the planning of their group’s objectives and goals. Members feel a sense of ownership towards their role in the group because they helped to create their goals. Members are given tasks or told what their duty is and suggestions are rarely welcomed. Members collaborate together and use their talent and experience to meet goals. Members are very cautions about what they say and are afraid to ask questions. Members base their success on trust and encourage all members to express their opinions, varying views, and questions.

Characteristics of effective teams Team must have a clear goal a results-driven structure competent members unified commitment collaborative climate high standards understood by all external support and encouragement principled leadership

Are you a team player? Would you rather work alone or with a group? Do people like working with you? Are you flexible in adjusting to new situations or new work demands? Are you willing to help out another team member if they are struggling?

“Wearing the same shirts doesn’t make you a team.” Teamwork quotes “Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success.” “Wearing the same shirts doesn’t make you a team.” “Talent wins games but teamwork and intelligence win championships.” M. Jordan Remember the Titans: 1971, suburban school in Virginia. The true story of a newly appointed African-American coach and his high school team on their first season as a racially integrated unit. Reflection: Teamwork #11 Using the Internet and the information we discussed in class: Know the “Big Goal”— What does this mean to you? Understand your role— What is meant by this statement? Ask for feedback— What would be the purpose of asking for feedback as part of a team? Establish the best “culture” for getting work done— What does this mean in a teamwork situation? Know the rules— Big Goal – powerful, measurable, ambitious, meaningful 4. Culture: establish a team-oriented organization…it starts from the top down; provide training (know what other departments do) and resources (a place to meet, adequate time); give teams really important assignments
