The Portuguese territory has been occupied by different people over the centuries .

14th century – Discoveries The beginning of globalization...

Islands: Excellent climate for farming (sugar, wine) Fishing Trading Support for navigation

From 15th to 17th centuries

Countless portuguese migrated to these countries over the centuries. From 1460 The Portuguese colonized: Cape Verde Guinea São Tomé and Príncipe Angola Mozambique Countless portuguese migrated to these countries over the centuries.

Consequences of colonization: Expansion of territory Slade trade Monetary interests (diamond, spices etc.)

1497 – 1499 Sea route of India

1500 – Discovery of Brazil Great wealth to Portugal: Sugar Gold mines Precious stones Waves of migrants went to Brazil to work on plantations: Portuguese Italian African slaves

End of 19th century / Early 20th century Brazil - 70% of the population were Portuguese emigrants. Causes: The end of slavery; the search for better living conditions.

End of 19th century / Early 20th century Until the beginning of the 1960s, Portuguese emigration was essentially transoceanic.

The Revolution of April, 25, 1974 and the colonial war April, 25, 1974 – The independence of Portuguese colonies The colonial war causes the greatest exodus in Portuguese history 500 000 Portuguese returned to Portugal from Africa in six months!

20th century

Second half of 20th century In search of job opportunities nearly 2 million Portuguese left the country. Mostly young men with low education. Destinations: France; Switzerland; Germany; Luxembourg. Consequences: - Rural areas began to be deserted; - Families were separated.

Early 21st century Major destinations: United Kingdom Angola Spain Now, the emigrants are mainly high educated young people of both sexes!

But, until 2009, Portugal also received many immigrants looking for a job.

After 2009 - Many retired, especially English and German, come for our country, looking for good weather and opportunities to try different sports such as golf. Their favorite region is the Algarve!
