WHAT IS CULTURE? The shared way of life of a large group of people -Passed down to each generation - Customs -Ties us to one group, separates us from others Culture regions- division of he Earth in which people share a similar way of life, including language, religion, economic systems, and values

CULTURAL HEARTH A Center where cultures developed and from which ideas and traditions spread outward

RELIGION Plays a HUGE role in culture -Dress, foods, social relations, form of gov’t., laws, world view Not just a belief, but a way of life

SECULAR NOT Anti-Religious, Simply Means without Religious Influence (example: US Government)

LANGUAGE Allows a cultural group to communicate with each other -To pass on their culture -Unifies the group -Creates a cultural identity

CULTURAL CHANGE

CULTURAL DIFFUSION The spread of ideas from one culture to another who then adopts them -Through TV, radio, internet, travel, migration, war, trade

INNOVATION Taking existing elements of society and create something new to meet a need.

ACCULTURATION When a society adopts only SOME elements of another culture -They still highly value their own culture

ASSIMILATION -They give up their original culture When a society adopts ALL parts of another culture -They give up their original culture

GLOBALIZATION The blending of cultures all over the world elements -Creates a global set of cultural elements

TRADITIONALISM Protecting a culture from outside influences Does not want to change -Opposite of globalization
