What is Culture? Total knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors shared by and passed on by the members of a specific group. llhammon Fall 2008

3 What is a society? A group that shares a geographic region, a sense of identity, and a culture.

How do cultures change? Innovation is a newly developed way of doing things. EX: TELEPHONES, LIGHT BULBS, MOVIES, AIRPLANES diffusion – occurs when an innovation or other culture trait spreads through a society and perhaps into another culture region. EX: TRAVEL, MIGRATION, TRADE acculturation (cultural convergence) – process by which one culture changes through its meeting with another culture. EX: Chinese Restaurant in NYC, McDonalds in China cultural divergence – restriction of a culture from outside influences EX: At least 40% of things on TV must be in French or On the radio, at least 40% of songs played must be by French artists llhammon Fall 2008

What is ethnocentric? when people feel most comfortable with their own group and they believe that the ways and beliefs of their own culture are the best ones or the only right ones. What are the three innovations having the greatest impact on Earth’s cultural geography? farming (development of agriculture) living in cities (urbanization) using machinery to make goods (technology) llhammon Fall 2008

6 ABC’s of Culture With your partner you will work at 1 of the 11 tables. Each table is 1 of the ABC’s of Culture. On each flip card should be the Name of the element of culture that on your table. Under each flap you will write down important information from the note card. Also include any other information or examples you might gather from the pictures. You will have 5 minutes a station
