ASTM PCEOCP VID Matrix Design and Funding Subgroup March 19, 2008 San Antonio, TX

Agenda Introduction and membership Project organization and meeting rules Project timeline Scope of work Matrix design Funding Key questions (inputs and outputs) Actions and assignments Next meeting

Membership – open to all PCEOCP members 5 additive suppliers, 3 lube suppliers, 2 OEMs, 2 ind. labs ILSAC, ACC, API, PCEOCP and TMC are all represented

Meeting and Balloting Follow ASTM rules for conducting the meeting Industry liaisons PCEOCP-Thom Smith and Glen Mazzamaro ILSAC – Jim Linden ACC – Jerry Wang API – Kevin Ferrick and David Smith TMC – John Zalar Records posted on the TMC website Generally follow ASTM voting rules but limited to one vote per company Attempt unanimous consensus PCEOCP will have the final vote based on its rules

Project Process and Boundary VID Consortium GF-5 Timeline Final test procedure with demonstrated discrimination ILSAC/Oil MOU (API) PCEOCP recommendations Sub Timeline Matrix/Funding Subgroup Matrix Options Scope Inputs outputs Funding options VID Precision Testing – managed by TMC

Timeline GF-5 timeline Proposed subgroup timeline Timeline is affected by the group’s ability to get key inputs

Scope – Matrix Design The primary goal is to establish VID test precision Repeatability and reproducibility based on fully formulated reference oils representative of current technology such as GF-4 capable or GF-5 prototype The secondary goal is to establish base oil interchange and viscosity grade readacross guidelines The group will continue to monitor Precision Matrix Program until completed

Scope - Funding The primary purpose is to recommend minimum funding needs for proposed matrix options to ILSAC/Oil The funding recommendation will include sources and breakdown of funding

Key Inputs – Matrix Design Final test procedure and demonstrated discrimination number of matrix oils suggested requirements: GF-5 demonstration oil, GF-4 certification oil, current technology oil(s) that show discrimination Inquire API BOI/VGRA for oils For precision matrix only, there needs be only 1 viscosity grade number of participating labs and stands (min. 2 labs and 3 stands) Engine age effect BOI option Parameters? VGRA option

Key Outputs – Matrix Design Matrix options Precision + BOI + VGRA + BOI and VGRA

Key Inputs – Funding Minimum number of tests to meet primary goals Number of tests desired to address other goals - list goals and number of tests needed for each individual goal Cost per test from labs including the decision on how many reference runs for stand calibration Number of participating labs and stands Reference oil supplies

Key Outputs – Funding Funding estimate for each matrix options Precision only + BOI + VGRA + BOI and VGRA
