2001 Census of Population Products and Services Presentation to ACCOLEDS December 6, 2001

2001 Census of Population Products and Services Presentation Outline Major Changes for 2001 I-SHELF Internet Delivery Model • Why did we develop it? / Background on I-SHELF • Graduated Access Levels • Prototype Demonstration 2001 Census of Population Products and Services Line - Highlights Summary of Public Good Information Available

2001 Census of Population Products and Services Major Changes for 2001 Internet primary delivery vehicle for Standard Products Theme-based approach for dissemination of tabular data More data available for FREE (“Public Good”) down to CMA/CA level • Use of “Plain Language Text” (where applicable) for Internet products

2001 Census of Population Products and Services Major Changes for 2001 (Concluded) METADATA search and indexing capabilities for Internet and Electronic Reference Products • Far fewer CD-ROM products • PUMF - strong possibility of one hierarchical file only • Inclusion of new 2001 geographies (dissolved CSDs, DAs, UAs, DPLs, MIZs)

2001 Census of Population Products and Services I-SHELF Internet Delivery Model Why Did We Develop It? Leverage off E-SHELF technology Capitalize on Internet as key data delivery mechanism Make more data available to the public while keeping content, delivery and data retrieval capabilities simple Move away from 1996 CD-ROM-based model

2001 Census of Population Products and Services I-SHELF Internet Delivery Model Why Did We Develop It? (Concluded) Integration with Canadian Statistics Module and CANSIM II Layered delivery method - different things to different levels of users • Avoid HTML mark-up for Internet tables

2001 Census of Population Products and Services I-SHELF Internet Delivery Model Graduated Internet Access - LEVEL 1 Public Good Access to provide more data to the general public in both HTML and CSV output formats “One GEO at a time” Directed via catalogue reference to DSP and/or regional offices for advanced data and output needs

2001 Census of Population Products and Services I-SHELF Internet Delivery Model Graduated Internet Access - LEVEL 2 Public Good - EXPANDED access to DSP, DLI, Funding Feds, Provincial and Territorial Focal Points, Regional Reference Centres (HTML, CSV and B2020) • Other data needs for these groups serviced through existing channels Directed via catalogue reference to regional offices for advanced data and output needs

2001 Census of Population Products and Services I-SHELF Internet Delivery Model PROTOTYPE DEMONSTRATION

2001 Census of Population Products and Services Standard Data Products Population and Dwelling Counts, Theme-based Tabulations, Profiles, and PUMF Sub-headings transparent to users for Theme-based Tabulations Graduated Internet Access Model Varying levels of geography depending on product Products to be specified with Internet dissemination in mind More “public good” (free) data available which are easy to understand and download Expanded content of popular Community Profiles without losing simple, user-friendly qualities New dissolved cumulative CSD Profile (1996 to 2001) Proposed hierarchical PUMF file based on one sample with linked component files (HOUSEHOLDS, FAMILIES, INDIVIDUALS)

2001 Census of Population Products and Services Reference Products Preview, Dictionary, Catalogue, Stubsets, Handbook, Reference Maps and Technical Reports Implement concept of “Plain Language Text” Preview to be reduced in content for easier reference and used as a marketing tool Dictionary, Catalogue and Stubset products become integral parts of the principle of METADATA search and indexing capability with linkages to IMDB Stubset products - provide details of all census variables (working tool for facilitating specification of custom tabulations with clients) Selected Census Reference Maps, up to 11” x 17”, will be printable via Internet. All Census Reference Maps will be printable “on-demand” through ROs Reduction in formalized print while increasing available Internet output options (HTML and PDF formats)

2001 Census of Population Products and Services Custom Services Custom Cross-tabulations, Semi-custom Profiles and a newly proposed Data Analysis Service Produced from both 100% and 20% databases across census years from 1971-2001 Data Analysis Service (proposed): Internet interface that will allow researchers to submit SAS/SPSS code Run against secured subset of 20% database Resulting output of regressions, correlations, etc. are verified by STC staff for confidentiality prior to delivery Research and feasibility study currently underway

2001 Census of Population Products and Services Analytic Products Current proposal under development and review “Census Newsletter” - will contain a series of short articles with analytic perspective on selected 2001 Census themes/topics Internet only Planned release one month following the Day of Release products for the theme/topic
