What is CPR? CPR is the life-saving procedure of artificial respiration It is used to aid a person in the event of a heart attack or another medical emergency CPR stands for “cardiopulmonary resuscitation”

The Steps: Part 1 Check if the scene is safe Check if the person responds Yell for help Call 911 for help and get an AED

The Steps: Part 2 Lay the person on their back on flat ground Check for breathing or gasping Remove the person’s clothes out of the way Place hands on the lower breastbone, then give compressions There should be 30 compressions given at around 18 seconds After compressions, give 2 breaths with or without a mask The chest must rise, 10 seconds or less needed for breaths Attach and turn on AED when it arrives, follow AED instructions Repeat until help arrives

The Difference With Age Infants should be given compressions with 2 fingers Children could have compressions done with 1 hand or 2 hands Children sometimes have special AED pads Adults are to be given compressions with 2 hands as usual

AED AED stands for “automated external defibrillator” It detects the heart rate of the person and sends electrical shocks through the pads You use it as soon as possible after you give compressions It is used by attaching the pads on the person and listening to its instructions
