2 When do we use CPR? Victim is not responding
Usually due to a heart attack, stroke, severe bleeding, or cardiac arrest. WHY To save the life of someone whose heart has stopped beating and isn’t breathing

3 CPR Hands only CPR http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4eVr441SEA
Call 911 Push hard and fast in the center of the chest until help arrives Hand position: One hand on top of the other, placed on the sternum, shoulders directly over your hands

4 Chain of Survival Call for help- CPR Defibrillator
Provide as much information about the situation to the 911 operator as possible CPR Gives the victim a chance to survive until medical help arrives Defibrillator Device that delivers an electric shock to the heart to restore normal electrical rhythm Advanced medical care Paramedics and physicians will use their resources to keep the patient alive

5 Rescue Breathing Person is unconscious, has a heartbeat, but is not breathing Try to wake the patient up Call for help Check for a pulse Head tilt, chin lift One breath every 5 seconds for 2 minutes Recheck for pulse- if no pulse, begin CPR Keep going until help arrives

Be sure the scene is safe, especially that the patient is not laying in a puddle of water Open the unit Turn it on Apply the pads Follow the directions from the unit Continue CPR if needed

7 911 Call Common 911 call mistakes People don’t know where they are People don’t listen to directions People hang up Practice with your partner What is the nature of your emergency? What is your location? How old is the person? Are they breathing? Can you walk? Is there smoke coming from under the door? Did you unlock the door, so our crew can get to you? Once they let you off the line send someone out to meet the emergency responders, so they can find you quickly.
