Notes # 4 The World Turned Upside Down

???Why did I title the notes “The World Turned Upside Down”???

Retreat With more Patriots joining the cause of Liberty, and with newly arrived French troops to help, the British retreated to New York City in the North and Yorktown, Virginia, in the South. Both places had access to the ocean, because the British navy was still strong when together, so they could support the British troops.

Washington fires the first shot at Yorktown

The Battle of Yorktown September 28 – October 19, 1781 Washington, watching the British in New York, hears that the French are sending a second fleet to Yorktown to defeat the British forces there. He quickly decides to move most of his forces to Yorktown, leaving a small army disguised to make the British in New York think that Washington is still there.

Surrender After fighting a long siege, the British, unable to escape by land because they were blocked by the Americans and French, and unable to escape by the ocean because of the French fleet, surrender on October 19, 1781.

!!!Defeat!!! With more than 8,000 troops surrendering at Yorktown, the British army was not a total loss. However, though there was still support for the war, the British government decided to start peace negotiations with the Americans.

Treaty of Paris September 3, 1783, the end of the Revolution Treaty of Paris September 3, 1783, the end of the Revolution. The British refused to pose for the portrait, but did recognize American Independence.

???Now what Exit Ticket??? Yea!!! America is now independent. But what do we do next? When you come back, you’ll learn about mistakes, and good decisions. But what would you do? Make a list of some of the first things that America should do after winning their independence.
