Settling Down in a New World 4-2.2  Compare the various European settlements in North America in terms of economic activities, religious emphasis, government, and lifestyles.

Review of Spanish Colonies The Spanish set up colonies in the New World and named it New Spain. New Spain: Florida Southwestern parts of North America (Mexico) Missions were established in St. Augustine (Florida) and Santa Fe (New Mexico) where Native Americans worked to make a profit for the Spanish

New Spain

The English Colonies The English colonists settled along the Atlantic Coast of North America. Motivation: Religious freedom & economic opportunity Main colonies: Jamestown, VA & Plymouth, MA Originally hoped for gold, but planted cash crops such as tobacco. Called “New England”

The Dutch and New Netherland The Dutch founded the colony of New Netherland along the Hudson River. They did not create any more colonies. Forced to give up the colony by the English, where it became the English colonies of New York and New Jersey.

The French Settlement of Quebec was founded on the St. Lawrence River in Canada and was named New France. Established fur trade with Native Americans so they could sell fur to Europe for a profit. Not heavily populated, mainly trappers and traders.

Colonies in Business (Economic) All colonies produced food for themselves. New Spain and New England: Cash Crops Tobacco Rice Indigo Lumber New France: Fur trade All hoped to become economically stronger than other European countries.

We Believe…(Religious) Spanish and French: Established Roman Catholic missions Converted Native Americans English: Mostly Protestant, Anglican/Church of England, Quakers, Puritans Wanted to establish a model religious community Established community churches (also looking to make a profit) Allowed colonists the freedom to make religious choices

The Powers that Be (Government) The Mother Country determined the type of government. Spanish and French – Absolute Monarchs Very little self government allowed English – Parliament Legislative representation Shared responsibility with governors and others appointed by the crown.

Colonist Life Depended on colony’s origin and location Many traded resources French: Welcomed by Native Americans and set up a fur trade Spanish: Missions, forts, ranches Very self-sufficient English: Farms with indentured servants and slaves Kids went to school, played games, learned life skills from parents.
