Purpose of social action and community media

The purpose of social action or community media To change attitudes i.e. HIV or Aids stigma To raise awareness: climate change/ domestic violence To change voting behaviour: could be social action against fox hunting To infiltrate mainstream media: Sangat TV To create or strength community ties:

Research issues Social Action and Community media Aims and objectives Issues can be to do with: Social: issues such as climate change, lack of house or something community based in your area. Personal: People can have their own personal views about issues both local, national and global Political: Political issues can include protesting against government cuts, or even as in Egypt’s case a change in government.

Ethical considerations As social action issue often involves local, global or national issues, which can be political, social or even personal reasons this means that you will often be dealing with sensitive's around different subject areas:

Also why you might have to be sensitive when researching or reporting on these issues?

Access issues What issues might you have getting access to the topic area?

Task I want you to research a social action issue and also a community media production i.e. local radio, local TV i.e. Sangat or a free paper and I want you to find out in pairs the following; What resources do they have? Where do they get funding from? How do they distribution and exhibition their media or their issue? Is there any evidence that there has been a change either potential or real that the campaign has worked?
