Fractions Learning objective: To find ½ , ¼ and ¾ of a shape

Fractions What is a fraction? A fraction is when an object or number is divided equally into parts A fraction is an equal ‘bit’ or ‘part of something Fractions are written like this:

This is 1 whole pizza

1 1 2 2 This pizza has 2 halves This pizza has 2 halves 1 + 1 = 1 whole 2 2

This pizza has 4 parts 14 14 14 14 14 14 14 14 1 whole

¼ of the pizza looks like this…

¾ of the pizza looks like this…

Half Fractions When an object is evenly divided into two – each part is called a half 2 parts make the whole object ½ + ½ = 1 = +

Quarter fractions + + + = When an object is evenly divided into 4 it becomes a quarter ¼ + ¼ + ¼ + ¼ = 1 + + + =

Quarter Fractions Here are more examples of ¼ fractions + + +

Questions What fraction of the square is blue? What fraction of the rectangle is red?

Questions What fraction of this circle is red? What fraction of this circle is blue?

Questions How much of this triangle is coloured orange? How much of the square is shaded blue?
