1 Implementation Review the mathematical concept. Review the problem solving steps. READ: Children read the part that is asking them to find something out. UNDERSTAND: Children explain what they need to find out. Children identify what information they will need to find it out. Remove the coloured rectangle. Children find the information they need to find it out. CHOOSE A STRATEGY: Children identify strategies that they could use to find it out. USE A STRATEGY: Children use a strategy to find it out. Children record their thinking as they find it out. CHECK: Children reread the part that asked them to find something out. Children check that they have found it out. Children check they have recorded their solution correctly. Children follow the problem solving steps to solve the 2nd level of the problem, with minimal teacher guidance. Children who solve the 2nd level, follow the problem solving steps to solve the 3rd level of the problem independently. Children use the problems as a guide to create their own problem, either alone or in pairs/small groups. Children solve their own problem. Throughout the lesson, children share solution strategies. At the end of the lesson, children explain how they created their own problems.

2 Fractions and Decimals 1
Problem Solving Halves of Shapes William drew a circle, and coloured half of it blue. What might the circle look like? William drew a square, and coloured half of it blue. What might the square look like? William drew a rectangle, and coloured half of it blue. What might the rectangle look like? Fractions and Decimals 1 Create your own problem! Now solve it!

3 Fractions and Decimals 1
Problem Solving Halves of Shapes Mary covered half of her cake in chocolate icing, and half of her cake in strawberry icing. What could the cake look like? Mary covered half of her pizza in tomato sauce and half of her pizza in barbecue sauce. What could the pizza look like? Mary covered half of her sandwich in jam and half in peanut butter. What could the sandwich look like? Fractions and Decimals 1 Create your own problem! Now solve it!

4 Fractions and Decimals 1
Problem Solving Halves of Shapes Susie cut a cake in half. What might the cake look like? Susie cut a pizza in half. What might the pizza look like? Susie cut a sandwich in half. What might the sandwich look like? Fractions and Decimals 1 Create your own problem! Now solve it!

5 Fractions and Decimals 1
Problem Solving Halves of Shapes How many different ways can you divide a square in half? How many different ways can you divide a triangle in half? How many different ways can you divide a circle in half? Fractions and Decimals 1 Create your own problem! Now solve it!

6 Fractions and Decimals 1
Problem Solving Halves of Shapes These two halves are made from squares that are different sizes. Which half was made from the larger shape? How do you know? These two halves are made from circles that are different sizes. Which half was made from the larger shape? How do you know? These two halves are made from triangles that are different sizes. Which half was made from the larger shape? How do you know? Fractions and Decimals 1 Create your own problem! Now solve it!
