S= Situation When & Where speech will be given Speaking at a certain place at a given time for a specific length In school- that is most often in a classroom to your peers In the real world- speaking situations widely vary

P= Purpose Why are you speaking? The goal the speaker hopes to achieve in his speech Purpose is the speaker’s intent to impact the audience in some way each time he speaks 3 main Purposes of speaking= PIE P= to persuade I= to inform E= to entertain note- your speech may be any combination of these

A= Audience To WHOM are you speaking to? MOST important element of SPAM Speakers MUST adjust their message based on their audience- you must adapt your speech to your listeners

M= Method(s)/ Message The various tools and strategies speakers can use to develop their speech For example: carefully consider and plan word choice, organization of ideas, gestures, the research you will use, quotes, Do the “M” LAST when you are preparing
