2 SOAPSTONE INTRODUCTION
SOAPStone is an acronym We use the SOAPStone method to decipher information about a nonfiction text, including the author’s attitude toward the particular topic.

3 Subject Who is the voice that tells the story, or in nonfiction, the author? What do we know about the writer’s life and views that shape this text? Are they a reliable source on the topic? How do you know?

4 Occasion What is the time and place of the piece, the situation, or context which gave rise to the writing or speech? EX: If it is a speech, why is the speech being given? Is there an event in history that prompted it?

5 Audience Who is the group of readers or listeners whom this piece is directed towards? The audience may be one person or a group. What qualities, beliefs, or values do the audience members have in common?

6 Purpose The reason behind the text Is it informative, persuasive, or entertaining? What does the speaker, writer, or filmmaker want the audience to do, feel, say, or choose?

7 Subject The general topic, content, and ideas contained in the text. What is this piece about in 1-2 words?

8 Tone What is the author/speaker’s attitude towards the topic?
Is the tone positive or negative? Hopeful or critical? Light-hearted or serious? Playful or ironic? What choice of words (diction), inclusion of details, language, and use of rhetorical devices let you know the speaker’s tone or attitude?
