February Black History Month

Goal of black history month American history has always focused on European settlers and their contributions, ignoring the role of Blacks in the US Black History Month is a time to learn and appreciate the experience and history of African Americans American history through the point of view of African Americans

1.) Prejudice against others based on skin color/ background Racism 1.) Prejudice against others based on skin color/ background 2.) social structures and laws that restrict people based on skin color/background Examples: restrictions to ones job, one´s income, ones neighbhorhood, social services, political rights, access to education, safety

This Lesson We will learn about Racism in the US, and Prominant African Americans who have challenged and changed it.

Slavery in the US 1610- 1864 Cotton Fields Slavery was legal in the South -White slaveowners became rich off free labor -Black families stayed slaves for generations. - many died early from overwork and malnutrition

Option 1: Escape The Underground Railroad Harriet Tubman- former slave who helped over 300 slaves escape to freedom in Canada or Mexico

The American Civil War and Empancipation 1861-1865 Abolitionists- People from different races, religions, and regions that wanted to abolish slavery Became a large movement in 1850´s The South, wanting to keep slavery, tried to break away from the US Freed Black slaves fought against the south Slavery was abolished Black gained citizenship and the right to vote.

Jim Crow 1890-1965 The prejudice: The structure: former slaves, who could legally vote, would make laws, run for office, and would threaten whites’ political and economic status. The structure: voting restrictions, segregation, inferior education and social services, police repression.

1960’s- Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, and The Civil Rights Movement Civil disobedience Community action to not follow laws in order to change them. the tactic used by the Black community to challenge Jim Crow Laws.
