What does SATs Stand For? Statutory Assessment Tasks and Tests (also includes Teacher Assessment). Taken at the end of Key Stage 1 (at age 7) and at the end of Key Stage 2 (at age 11). 23 June 2018

What are the changes to previous years? September 2014 – new curriculum introduced. Revised national curriculum assessed for the first time in May 2016 New curriculum – new standards – new tests. 23 June 2018

New Curriculum, new standards, new tests. Mental maths test has been replaced with an arithmetic test. No Level 6 tests. All pupils will take just 1 set of tests Tests include questions that will stretch the most able. 23 June 2018

How are the children assessed? For all children in Year 6 there are two sorts of assessments: tests teacher assessments 23 June 2018

When do these tests happen? This year the tests dates will be from the 9th - 12th May. Usually there are two tests per day and it is a busy week for children and staff... alike. 23 June 2018

What does teacher assessment involve and is it different from testing? Teacher assessment draws together everything the teacher or teachers know about a child, including observations, marked work and school assessments. Teacher assessment is not a ‘snapshot’ like tests and is therefore more reliable. There can be a difference between teacher assessment results and test levels. 23 June 2018

What will the result look like? Scaled scores Helps test to be reported consistently and maintain meaning over time – 2 pupils achieving the same scaled score in different years will have demonstrated the same attainment. National Standard will be ‘100’ The ‘raw score’ that equates to ‘100’ will change yearly. Raw scores translated to a scaled score. Pupils receive a raw score, scaled score and confirmation of attainment of the national standard. 23 June 2018

What do the tests involve? 23 June 2018

ENGLISH 23 June 2018

Writing There is no writing test for any schools in 2014. Writing will be assessed on Teacher Assessment of normal classroom writing tasks; the same method as KS1 Writing. There is statutory moderation of some schools and this will take place by the end of the Summer Term. 23 June 2018

Reading Comprehension This year there will be a greater focus on fictional texts. 3-5 unrelated texts of increasing difficulty and a mixture of text types. Children will have a total of one hour to read the texts and complete the questions at their own pace. The reading answer booklet will comprise approximately 35 to 40 questions (totalling 50 marks). The questions are: shorter, closed response items (such as multiple choice and matching questions); shorter, open response items; and longer, open response items that require children to explain and comment on the texts in order to demonstrate a full understanding. 23 June 2018

English grammar, punctuation and spelling Greater focus on knowing and applying grammatical terminology with the full range of punctuation tested. Technical terms in grammar tested Spelling patterns and methodologies form the basis of spellings tested Paper 1: 45minutes – GPS (50 marks) Paper 2: 15 minutes – Spelling test (20 marks) 23 June 2018

MATHS 23 June 2018

Maths Mental maths test removed 2 papers – reasoning 40 minutes each Arithmetic test introduced to assess basic mathematical calculations No contextualises questions 36 questions, 40 marks, 30 minutes Covering: Straightforward addition and subtraction More complex calculations with fractions Long division and long multiplication 23 June 2018

How is SATs week organised? A timetable is issued to school, telling us on which days tests must be administered. We can determine at what time tests begin. All children must sit the tests at the same time. Test papers can only be opened 1 hour before the tests begin. Tests are completed either in classrooms or the hall, with any displays that may help covered over. The LA monitor 10% of schools per year. Children are divided into small groups for test administration to ensure they are properly supported and feel secure. 23 June 2018

What help can children have? In the reading test, children must read the text and questions by themselves, but MAY have help recording their answers, if this is done in a normal classroom situation. In maths teachers can read questions to any child who asks (and we encourage this), some children will have the whole paper read to them, on a one to one. Teachers can encourage, but not guide or say that an answer is correct or incorrect. Some children can be given up to 25% extra time if they have identified learning needs. This will be applied for and approved in advance. Words on a test paper can be transcribed where a marker may not be able to read a child’s answer. 23 June 2018

How can parents help? Attending meetings and parents evenings. Supporting home/extra curricular learning. Not putting children under too much pressure. Ensuring children arrive for tests: - in good time - having had breakfast - having gone to bed at a reasonable time 23 June 2018
