Do Now Read “My Planet Diary” on pg. 4 Copy the question and answer it in the Do Now section of your notebook. Have you ever looked at objects through a magnifying glass or a microscope? Why is a microscope needed to study cells?

Chapter 1 Section 1 Discovering Cells

All Living things are made of… Cells What do you know about cells?

What do you know about the different parts of a cell? Cell structure What do you know about the different parts of a cell?

Are all cells the same? NO. There are different types of cells. Each cell has a different job or function. The job will cause each cell to have a different shape/size.

Cell function Cells need to take materials in and let wastes out in order to live, grow, reproduce, and do their jobs.

Cell Types Red Blood Cells Nerve Cell Skin Cells

Cell function Look at the picture on pg. 5 What materials go IN to cells/organisms? What materials go OUT of cells/organisms? Wastes Food Excess Water Water Carbon Dioxide Oxygen

microscopes Microscopes magnify, or increase the size of, objects. The first microscope was made around 1590 Before microscopes, no one knew cells existed

Before we move on…. What is a theory? An explanation on how things occur based on observations and evidence. What are all living things made of ? Cells Where do cells come from? Other cells

The cell is discovered! In 1663, Robert Hooke looked at a piece of cork through a microscope He saw that the cork,(dead bark of oak trees), was made of tiny boxes He called the tiny boxes “cells”

LIVING CELLS ARE SEEN Anton van Leeuwenhoek was the first to see living cells through a microscope. In 1674, he looked at drops of lake water, scrapings from teeth, and water from rain gutter under his microscope. He saw one-celled organisms moving around! “Animalcules”

Plants are made of cells In 1838, Matthias Schleiden used a microscope and realized that all plants are made of cells

Animals are made of cells! In 1839, after using a microscope to study animals, Theodor Schwann concluded that all animals are made of cells, too.

Virchow’s hypothesis In 1855, Rudolf Virchow hypothesized (predicted) that cells divide to form new cells. All cells come from other cells that already exist.

Cell theory The research of these scientists’ led to the Cell Theory… All living things are composed of cells. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things. All cells are produced from other cells.

What does a microscope do? Magnify objects, or make them larger

Who viewed the first cell? Who viewed the first cell that was alive? Who viewed the first cell? Leeuwenhoek Hooke Virchow Leeuwenhoek Hooke Virchow

Which is NOT part of the cell theory? Who realized that all animals are made of cells? All living things are made of cells Cells are the basic unit of structure & function in organisms All cells are the same Hooke Schleiden Schwann

Conclusion (main idea!!) The microscope allowed scientists to discover and study cells and their research led to the Cell Theory

In your notebook… Look at Figure 2 on pages 6-7. Respond to the three questions in your notebook.
