OGC: Project Outline Online Language Learning program CEFR A1: absolute beginners A2: false beginners Offered twice a year: before the winter semester and before the spring semester 3 ECTS, then attend courses at the next level of language proficiency The Erasmus+ Online Greek Course is an online language learning program.   We have two courses A1 + A2, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The A1 Course is targeted at absolute beginners and the A2 Course is targeted at false beginners. The program’s duration is six weeks and it is offered twice a year: once in August/September before the winter semester and once in January/ February before the spring semester. The Erasmus+ students, who successfully complete the course, are granted 3 ECTS credits. Many of these students enroll in the regular Erasmus classes of our School at the next level of language proficiency, upon their arrival in Greece.

Numbers of Erasmus + students

Structure of the course Duration: 6 weeks 3 Taster days: days of familiarization with the e-learning environment Intensive course: 2 Units per week 2 tutorial sessions per week (web conferencing) Progress & Final Test The A1 OGC was successfully launched in August 2014. The A2 OGC was launched in August 2015. The participation of Erasmus+ students has been increasing in numbers.   The OGC was designed and produced by the School of Modern Greek Language, with the support of the Department of European Educational Programs AUTh.

Blended Language Learning Synchronous & Asynchronous Learning Synchronous learning takes place in real time/ at the same time, but not in the same place. Asynchronous learning occurs not only in different locations, but also at different times The OGC incorporates Information & Communication Technology into a well-structured, user-friendly and effective language learning program. It combines synchronous and asynchronous learning, which we call Blended Learning. Synchronous learning takes place in real time/ at the same time, but not in the same place, e.g. chat & web conferencing. Asynchronous learning occurs not only in different locations, but also at different times

Three Modules Integrated Learning Content Tutoring sessions Learning Management System Integrated Learning Content Consists of a. The Moodle Learning Management System (LMS), which is supported by the e-learning Department AUTh. The Moodle platform hosts the course and provides all the necessary tools for running it. b. The second module is the learning content, which consists of videos, audios, texts & quizzes. All these are integrated into interactive learning objects and are available for asynchronous learning on the Moodle platform. c. Web-conferencing twice a week, i.e. Tutoring sessions with the participation of a teacher and a small group of students, for synchronous learning.

Moodle Scoring report User tracking Announcement forum Quick mail Students’ forum Task assignments The Moodle LMS provides an e-learning environment and the tools both for learning and for course management. Course management tools are the announcement forum, quick mail, the scoring report and user tracking. User tracking informs the instructor on students’ activity, when and for how long he/she last accessed the platform. The scoring report shows the scores of each student for each unit but also individual and class average scores.   Learning tools are the students’ forum and task assignments, which allow for collaborative and creative learning. The students forum serves the communication between students about experiences or problems during their stay but is mainly exploited as a learning tool. Games, challenges and contests aiming at improving the productive and receptive skills are organized via the students’ forum.

Learning Content Adobe Captivate software Multimedia learning content: videos, audios, texts & quizzes Attractive & interactive Asynchronous learning Multi-media material integrated into interactive learning objects (learning units) The second module is the learning content, which consists of videos, audios, texts & quizzes. All these are available for asynchronous learning on the Moodle platform. The multimedia learning content was created with the Adobe Captivate software, which is widely used for the creation of e-learning courses. The software integrates multimedia material, such as videos, audios, quizzes and interactive texts into learning objects,

Learning Content communicative contexts that the Erasmus students will be exposed to e.g. introducing oneself, greeting, buying smth. at the kiosk or the cafeteria, etc. each unit provides assessment the student can see his/her score at the end of each unit and review the quizzes, where he/she had wrong answers. The units cover the communicative contexts that the Erasmus students will be exposed to during their stay in Thessaloniki, e.g. introducing oneself, greeting, buying smth. at the kiosk or the cafeteria, etc. A further very useful course feature is that each unit provides assessment. The student can see his/her score at the end of each unit and review the quizzes, where he/she had wrong answers. In addition, the students take a progress test and a final test during the course. All these scores are reported in the Moodle platform and are available to the students and the teachers.

Online tutoring Web- conferencing twice a week BigBlueButton web conferencing system Online sessions with the participation of a teacher and a small group of students Synchronous learning Web-conferencing is an important component of the course. Small groups of students and their teacher join in ten online sessions in each course. The course uses the BigBlueButton web conferencing system of AUTh. The main objective of the tutoring session is to give the students the opportunity for oral production (speaking) through role- playing.

Online tutoring Oral production (speaking) through role playing Every session has a learning objective related to the learning unit. Speech practice, vocabulary, pronunciation Feedback by the teacher Communication in person with other students The main objective of the tutoring session is to give the students the opportunity for oral production (speaking) through role- playing. Every session has a specific topic & aim related to the learning unit. They have the opportunity to improve their vocabulary and pronunciation. They get feedback by their teacher, ask questions and communicate in person with their fellow students. Group participation enhances the learning process.

Evaluation of the course CEFR: A1 & A2 communication at a basic level Exchange information on familiar and routine topics Read, understand and write simple texts The OGC is structured and allows for creative learning. Evaluation of every cycle by the students the learning objective for levels A1 & A2 is communication at a very basic level. The learners should be able to exchange information on familiar topics, describe in simple terms aspects of their lives, read understand and write simple texts. Every cycle of the course has been evaluated by the students. The evaluation has been very good and the course has been enriched and improved in every cycle according to the feedback by the students.
