1 CPLA Video Case Studies Making Media Nursing

2 Making Media - Background First year, semester long 20 credit core module Involved 200 students with 4 staff members providing teaching and appropriate support. Lectures and practical workshops supported by online learning resources and reflective blog space Assessment - Two tasks: –50% Group audio/video product –50% Personal reflective account

3 Making Media - Rationale The module aimed to develop a more interactive approach to develop an understanding of the relationships between media practice and underpinning theory Establish the use of reflection towards career planning and learner autonomy Encourage inter-professional learning to develop skills related to working for/with a client, and learner autonomy Module was designed so that students are able to have control over their own learning, work collaboratively with peers from other disciplines.

4 Making Media - Description Introduction Lecture Workshops/Lectures Students divided into 10 timetabled seminar groups and scheduled for 8 weeks of workshops Students worked in groups and are asked to develop an audio/digital media presentation on student life at SHU or living in Sheffield Support and reflection Careers workshop 4 Workshops on Making Moving Image 4 Workshops on Making Moving Image 4 Workshops on digital audio Module Blackboard site containing lecture notes and tutors posted podcast summaries of issues arising 'Blog' area for students to reflect with workshop leaders posting weekly topics on the Blog to prompt reflection on topics related to the technical and theoretical aspects of media

5 Making Media - Description Apart from lectures and workshops, there was use of IT systems - The use of Blackboard module site, provided an area for feedback and a grade centre For academic staff the site enabled tracking of technical or other issues encountered and was used to prompt users about topics for reflection.

6 Making Media - Evaluation For students At mid-point of module - module evaluator visited each two workshop sessions (one audio/one video) –Video workshop, questions were prepared and students interview each other responding to the questions –Audio workshop, a facilitated recorded group discussion End of module - course evaluation questionnaire on Blackboard as well as from Blog entries and the final assessment task Vast majority of students recognised they have demonstrated and developed learner autonomy during the module Plan was to have 2 follow up focus groups during semester 2 For staff Participating staff has a focus group evaluation meeting In semester 2, two further individual meetings with teaching staff for planning process in further academic year
