Battle of the Books Just What is It?

What is Battle of the Books (B.o.B.)? America’s Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for students in grades 3-8. The purpose is simply to encourage students to read good books, teach them to strategize with their peers, and have fun while competing with peers.

How Does it Work? Students read books from our book list, summarize their books to earn points, and then compete with their peers in a team competition of three-four members per team in May. BOB meets monthly on the first Tuesday of each month, with the exception of January which meets the second Tuesday of the month. Additional Optional meeting at the end of October. It is important that students attend all meetings. The competition is conducted and organized at Medina Middle School in May. There are two divisions to join: Division I consists of grades 3-5, and Division II consists of grades 6-8, each with their own book lists.

How Are Points Earned? Students earn points for attending each monthly meeting, and it is important that they attend. Students will complete a graphic organizer or summary for each book they read. The purpose is to help students recall information needed for the end of year Battle Competition and earn points for themselves and their team. Students may earn extra points for their teams by creating a poster, power point, or summary of a book they have read.

Points = Rewards Students accrue points by attending meetings, writing their summaries, and doing extra projects. Those points are subtotaled and then added to the battle totals to help their team win the battle. Points are accrued during the competition in a game format and added to the team’s existing points. The winning team members are rewarded. Each participant receives a certificate of accomplishment at the end of the year.
