Enterprise data center N+1 and 2n options for power redundancy

Enterprise data center N+1 and 2n options for power redundancy Power is critical element in every enterprise data center and directly affects the level of systems availability. There are key power components that it exist in a data center: The main power source from the utility; The back-up generator; The uninterruptible power supply (UPS); The power distribution unit (PDU); The rack level PDU; and The internal power supplies in each server. Redundancy in enterprise data centers refers to increasing the reliability of these critical power components.

Enterprise data center N+1 and 2n options for power redundancy Power outages can result from; Weather conditions Equipment failure Power line damage; or Number of other causes. Any unplanned outage can have detrimental effects and can incur significant financial losses and customer goodwill. Because of these substantial risks, enterprise data centers must provide sufficient redundancy to address any unexpected power outages. Redundancy may be in the form of N+1 and /or 2N redundancy systems.

Enterprise data center N+1 and 2n options for power redundancy Defining N+1 and 2N Redundancy Options Enterprise data centers will all offer some form of redundancy. However, companies must understand exactly how the redundancy system is configured. The N+1 option makes sure that a UPS is always available. Because the system is run on two separate feeds, system failure can still occur. The 2N redundancy means the enterprise data center has double the amount of equipment needed. Any power outages will have no adverse effect on data center availability. An enterprise data center with 2N redundancy is often required for mission environments.

Enterprise data center N+1 and 2n options for power redundancy Does Every Company Need 2N Redundancy? All companies should select an enterprise data center with 2N redundancy. A viable trade-off is to select an enterprise data center with both N+1 and 2N redundancy options. Fully understanding the configuration of the redundancy options is important in selecting and enterprise data center.
