Welldon Park Primary School Welcome to our Year 6 SATS Meeting January 2017 How are we doing?

To give information about how children are assessed Aims of the meeting To give information about how children are assessed To discuss how the children are supported in school and how we can work together

Areas Assessed English reading paper: 1 paper English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling paper: 2 papers Mathematics: 3 papers assessing arithmetic and mathematical reasoning Writing and science: teacher assessment

Reporting Results You will receive test results for your child in English reading, English grammar, punctuation and spelling and mathematics. There is no test for English writing; this will be reported using teacher assessment. You will also receive separate teacher assessment judgements for English reading, mathematics and science.

When is SATs Week? SATs Tests for Year 6 pupils will take place between Monday 8th and Thursday 11th May Date Test Paper Monday 8th   Reading paper Tuesday 9th   Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG)   Paper 1 short answer  Paper 2  spelling Wednesday 10th Mathematics  Paper 1 (Arithmetic) Mathematics Paper 2 Reasoning Thursday 11th Paper 3 (Reasoning)

Key Stage 2 Reading The reading test is one paper Your child will have one hour, including reading time, to complete the test. There will be a selection of question types, including: Read and find the answer; Read and explain what is happening; Explain meanings of words; Explain how the author has structured the text or used certain words

Key Stage 2 Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar This test has two parts: a grammar and punctuation paper requiring short answers, lasting 45 minutes, and an aural spelling test of 20 words, lasting around 15 minutes. The paper tests children’s knowledge of: Word types: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs; Sentence structure: clauses, subordinate clauses; Vocabulary: meanings of words; Punctuation: capital letters, full stops, commas, question marks, colons, semi-colons, exclamation marks

Key Stage 2 Maths Children will sit three papers in maths: Paper 1: arithmetic, 30 minutes (written) Papers 2 and 3: mathematical fluency, solving problems and reasoning, 40 minutes per paper Paper 1 arithmetic questions: addition; subtraction; multiplication; division; fractions; decimals Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types to test children’s reasoning and how they apply their knowledge to solve mathematical problems

Key Stage 2 Writing Children will not be tested on their writing during SATs Week. Instead, a portfolio of ‘best writing from across different genres’ will be collated by the class teacher for every child. After being ‘Teacher Assessed’, children’s writing will be moderated in school and a sample of writing moderated with a cluster of schools to verify the school’s judgements. A number of schools will be required to take part in external moderation but are not informed until later in the year. Final judgements will be reported to parents/carers along with the result of all other assessments in July and passed onto their secondary school

How are the tests assessed and reported? The old system of national curriculum levels is now no longer used, after the Department of Education abolished it in Summer 2015. Instead, children will be given standardised scores. You will be given your child’s score, alongside the average for their school, the local area and nationally. There will also be a ‘performance descriptor’ of the expected standard for Key Stage 2 pupils. The Department for Education is aiming for 85 per cent of children to reach or exceed that standard.

Reporting Arrangements When the children’s assessment results have been converted into a scaled score, the school will be informed as to how well each pupil has achieved. 100 means a child is working at the expectations for a year 6 child Attainment is summarised as: developing (below the expectations); secure (working within expectations) and exceeding (working at greater depth within the expectations)

What is already in place at school to support our Year 6 children? In Summary… Higher pitch and expectations to practise key skills that are applied in real contexts so that children are made to think Pre-teaching and Precision Teaching Booster group sessions: dates and times to be advised SATs Revision Guides published by CPG available for purchase at a reduced rate

How can we work together to support our Year 6 children? In Summary… Support and encourage your child Help them to remain healthy and maintain a good attendance. Help them to go over the areas identified in homework for further study Encourage your child to have a good work/rest balance and have enough sleep

Ideas for Activities at Home Ensure children know their times tables and number facts Reading as much as possible: ask your child to summarise, explain and talk about the meaning of words Learning the year 5/6 spelling words Use websites: BBC bitesize also has great revision games and activities Ask the teachers for help and support if you require further support with websites or understanding tasks
