Year 6 SATs Meeting

2. What are SATs?
It is an end of year assessment taken at the end of KS2.
The tests will reflect the new national curriculum.
They are intended to be more rigorous
Children take KS2 SATs papers in two core subjects: English and Maths. These are broken down into 6 separate examined tests; all are marked externally.
Writing is marked internally and teacher assessments are moderated by the LA.

4. SATs Papers English Reading (Paper 1):
The reading test lasts for 1hour. Within this time, 3 different texts are given to read –often a mix of fiction, non-fiction and poetry – and a separate booklet of questions to answer about the texts.
There are different types of questions:
Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story’

5. Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title of the story’
Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the weather is like in the story’
Short constructed response, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’
Open-ended response, e.g. ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once upon a time. How does the writer increase the tension throughout this paragraph? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’
More complex questions – such as those asking for an explanation of the author’s choices – there will be several lines for free text.
There are 50 marks for this paper.

7. English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test:
Paper 1 – Grammar, punctuation and vocabulary
This paper is a 45 minute test, requiring short answers – 50 marks.
The new curriculum and questions refer to both children’s knowledge of grammatical terms (such as pronoun and conjunction) and use of language in the right context.
Some questions will also require children to put in the appropriate punctuation marks to clauses or sentences or to use a particular sentence structure.

8. Selected response, e.g. ‘Identify the adjectives in the sentence below’
Constructed response, e.g. ‘Correct/complete/rewrite the sentence below,’ or, ‘The sentence below has an apostrophe missing. Explain why it needs an apostrophe.’
Paper 2 – Spelling Test
Paper 2 assess spelling during a 15 minutes test – 20 marks.
There are 20 words to spell, which is read out as part of a sentence that is printed in the answer booklet. The children will be asked to write the missing word into the gap.
The words in the test will be based on the spelling rules taught across KS2, in increasing difficulty.

10. Teacher Assessment of Writing
From September, children have been asked to write a piece of text each week, as part of their normal English lessons.
We assess each piece according to the DfE Interim Teacher Assessment Framework. These contain statements which children have to attain. Children’s writing are assessed to see if they contain evidence of these statements.
As well as internal moderation of writing, Local Authority moderators ensure high standards of Teacher Assessment.
The expectations for meeting the national standard is higher, with a much greater emphasis on spelling, handwriting and punctuation.

12. Mathematics Papers:
There are 3 papers: paper 1 – Arithmetic, paper 2 & 3 – Mathematical Reasoning.
Arithmetic (Paper 1)
This is a 30 minute test containing questions, and carries 40 marks. The paper makes up just over one-third of the total marks available for mathematics.
It tests children’s number and calculation skills, such as number facts, multiplication tables and related division facts; others test the use of calculation methods.
Towards the end of the paper there are more challenging questions such as those using fractions or calculations with larger numbers.
For 2 mark questions, if the final answer is incorrect, they may still earn 1 mark for the correct use of formal long multiplication and division methods.

13. Mathematical Reasoning (Paper 2 & 3)
These papers last 40 minutes each and there are 35 marks available per paper.
As with the Arithmetic paper, towards the end, the questions become increasingly more challenging.
Questions include solving problems and covers the wider areas of mathematics such as geometry and statistics.
Some questions require children to explain and reason their mathematical thoughts and processes.

15. SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
Some support can be given to children who have an Education Health Care Plan. Requests for additional time will be made by teachers using their knowledge of children and the children’s individual needs.
Unless there are exceptional circumstances, no help can be given with the tests.
A teacher can help a child to read instructions on the maths test.
Children with visual impairment can have an enlarged copy of the test.
Children who do not have English as a first language can have a translator for maths.

16. SAT Timetable & Results
The Year 6 KS2 SATs will be administered in the week commencing 8 May 2017.
Results will be published on Tuesday 4th July 2017.
The previous national curriculum levels have been abolished and instead you will be notified of your child’s raw score (the actual number of marks they get), alongside their scaled score and whether they have reached the national average. 
The score needed to reach the national average has yet to be announced. The scale will be set so that reaching a score of 100 will indicate that your child is working at the expected standard for the end of Key Stage 2.

17. The Standards: KS2 English Reading, English GaPS & Mathematics
One standard can be attained: working at the expected.
Pupils will be grouped into 2 categories: ‘Working at the expected standard’ and ‘Not met the expected standard’.
An additional report will be provided alongside your child’s annual report indicating if they have achieved the higher standard/greater depth standard.
KS2 English Writing
There are 3 standards: working towards the expected standard, working at the expected standard, and working at greater depth within the expected standard.
There is a 4th category for those who do not the ‘working towards’ the standard – Pre-Key Stage.

18. What can you do at home?
There are some few important things that you can do to help during the week:
Ensure they have early nights;
Attendance and Punctuality is vital!
Have a good breakfast in the morning;
4. Revise, revise, revise! Go through the practise papers with your child.
English –
Read with your child daily, discussing the content and choice of words the author has made. Ask your child questions about their reading, encouraging them to identify words or phrases to back up their answers.

19. Practise spellings, handwriting and checking/editing their sentences.
Maths –
Learn timetables and the inverse facts, number facts.
Practise the standard written methods of calculation.

6. Talk to the children and explain that there is life after the tests! Don’t let them get worked up. Discuss strategies for remaining calm under pressure.
